Hi all-

I hope I am posting this under the proper forum section. Here is my work-in-progress:

Tour of Terror is a L4D2 custom campaign created by Brian Riggsbee, AKA novalin. The campaign is loosely based in Eastern Europe taking players through a large hostel, park, castle, sewers, old town, subway, freeway, and train yard. It is due for release early 2011.

…A short trailer video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqvo6-7vQHU
…The poster:
…A few images:

More videos and screenshots can be found on my website:

I will let you know when it is finished, shouldn't be too long now ;)

:D :D :D :D :D

~novalin

Simple modelling programs for props.

I'm working on a campaign for L4D that requires many props to be made, such as lights, chandeliers, doors, door frames, furniture, etc. Nothing super complicated but more than I can do with converting hammer brushes to models (which I could never get to work well anyway).
So I continue my search for an easy to use modeling program. I've tried Blender, Milkshape, and a few others and they are all just so counter intuitive to comfortably making the shapes that I want that I can't get anything done in them. Is there such thing as a modeling program that's similar to Hammer? I can make nearly anything I want in Hammer, but the detail can only go so far.

What's the difference between the files?? Did the level editor only make BSP's first, and then made maps into VPK's?? How do you make VPK files and how do you make BSP's?

I'd like someone to shed some light. (plz)

Alright, I'll list out the exact process I went through when making this map, maybe there isn't a problem with the flow but I problem with how I marked it or something.

1. Build the map in hammer and save

2. Run map, BSP normal, VIS normal, RAD normal, no HDR, run game when finished

3. Get into game, continue on nav error, put in commands director_stop, nb_delete_all, exec nav_mode

4. go to the first open room and place nav_mark_walkable

5. nav_generate_incremental

6. repeat steps 4 and 5 until the entire map is nav'd.

7. go around and nav_build_ladder on all the ladders and check to make sure they are connected to two regions/zones/whatever they're called

8. go to the spawn area and mark PLAYER_START

9. go to the saferoom and mark CHECKPOINT

10. go to panic event and mark everywhere I want panic zombies to spawn and move around in mark BATTLEFIELD

11. mark BATTLESTATION on all the places that I want the survivorbots to be able to fight the panic event from

12. done! nav_save. exit left 4 dead and restart from Hammer

13. NAV ERROR: Map is unplayable! and everything else after that is basically me floundering around trying to fix it and completely and utterly failing as far as I can tell, what do I do to fix this?

Ok, heres the copy paste from the L4D cusom Campaigns forum which I'm pasting here because of extremely slow responses there (althogh I'm not sure here will be much better, no offense)

Here it comes, another thread by me having a problem! Anyway, so I told everyone (a whole whopping 1 person I think) about the problems with infected being able to find me and stuff, after no luck I looked in the advanced nav mapping areas of the tutorial. Based on information from there I believe to have found that the problem is based in the flow. I can see that by using z_flow_delta 2. Some of the yellow arrows do not connect to each other, which is what I believe is causing the problem. But I cannot figure out how to get the arrows to meet, any suggestions, I've tried deleting everything (nav file) and redoing it all, because I figured the problem may have arrisen if I modified something in the map in that area. But to no avail, I have also tried just deleting the problem causing ones and remaking them, this has not solved it. if someone could give me a possible solution that would be great!

Hello everyone. Before everything, I would like to apologize for my English : I'm from Quebec/Canada so my primary language is French.

So I have read all that I could about LEAVES in hammer and I still don't understand how it works. I know that we don't want the program to Draw which is not in the player's line of sight to avoid unnecessary FPS problems but I don't know how to decide what WON'T be drawn…

My question is : How does it works lol… I've been passing over a hundred hours on my map and it's my first so I'd like it to work well. Thank you guys !!! :D

You guys can add me on Steam : hitmancd477

Or answer on this forum I'll be checking more than one time a day.

Again, sorry for my English.
Hello everyone!

I'm here to start a collaboration!
Using a template (Link below), you can build your own apartment for the survivors to attempt to survive in.

You can use custom sounds, textures, and models if you wish.

Guidelines:

You may make your apartment inaccessible to zombies but if you choose to do so you must have a way for mobs and special infected to spawn inside.

Nothing X-rated. Like pr0n. really. It's pretty self explanatory.

The Plaque on the wall that says Apartment for rent is where you put your name, any way you'd perfer.

Go easy on molotovs, pipebombs, pills and Medkits.

When you complete your map just attach or send the vmf and custom content zip'd or rar'd to moc.oohay|100noiruf#moc.oohay|100noiruf

Template - ( http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RB0QQK28 )

- - - - - - - - -
| _ _ Suite _ _ |
| _ 1 _ | _ 2 _ |
| _ 3 _ | _ 4 _ |
| _ 5 _ | _ 6 _ |
| _ _ Floor _ _ |

Apartment will appear like above.

Suite - Furion001
1. OPEN
2. OPEN
3. OPEN
4. OPEN
5. OPEN
6. OPEN

Post if you would like to join in.
If it comes to it I will add a second apartment or more floors based on how many want to join.

Hello,

I have 2 questions concerning mapping.

1st is regarding the skybox.
Is there a way to darken a sky instead of brightening it, using the enviroment lighting entity you apparently can only make the stuff brighter, not adding it at all with give the same effect as setting it on 0.

2nd is more regarding screenshots.
I want to make a screenshot of a map from a topview, kinda like they did with with the official campaigns.
How can i do this? When i look at the textured top view in hammer it only displays the boxes around the objects and all the hidden walls are filling your screen.
Ingame on the other hand you cant get a decent topview cuz ur always kinda seeing it 3d.

I hope someone can answer these for me, i would be very gratefull.

Greetings,
Dragon-Guard

Hi all, new here…

Right then, soundscapes - ive read soo much about them over the last few days - but i just cant seem to get a few things to work.

Basic stuff like transitioning between 2 scapes as you walk from an interior to an exterior are working fine.

However, the problem starts when trying to bring in other sfx, for example.

NM1, you've left the root, worked your way down through the apartments, and you stood a few feet away from the alley way (pile of dead bodies)

You can hear the ambient interior sounds AND the flies buzzing around the bodies.

In the NM vmf, a soundscape is positioned nearby, radius 244 (enveloping the dead bodies), directy above the dead bodies, you have a info_target and particle for fllies.

The target is called flies02 and is a referenced sound position within the nearby soundscape.

I have exactly mirored this set up - so my players can walk by a dead body and hear the flies.

However, it simply doesnt happen. You dont hear the flies - only the ambient sounds.

This is the 2nd day i spent trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

I thought I would add this here to. I already have a thread on the steam forums with no replies so far:

Hey guys,

Here is my extensive question list. Any help is greatly appreciated!

IF THE QUESTION IS ANSWERED, I WILL PUT "ANSWERED" IN FRONT OF THE QUESTION!

General

- When I put cut scenes in my movie, (basically using cameras with ingame stuff), how does it work with the l4dsdk? For example, lets say when the survivors hit a button, a camera looks over the shoulder of all 4 of them, and behind them spawns a tank or something. Will the models be the headless player models, (the models you are playing ingame don't have heads), or will they have heads?

- Is there a way to edit the game variables WITHOUT turning on sv_cheats? For example, lets say in a spot in my map I want to INCREASE the minimum/max health of my common infected. Is there a way to do this outside of turning on sv_cheats with the cvar entity and doing it that way?

-FOLLOWUP- If the only way I can do it is with sv_cheats, is there any way to make it server-sided only? Another words, having the ability to increase the health WITHOUT having players type god1, noclip, etc?

Weapons/ammo

- I see that there is a, "start ammo" cvar in each of the weapon spawns, however it is not accessible. Is this a beta-sdk problem? Will the final sdk give me the option of setting ammo on the weapons pickup?

- Is there a way to edit how much ammo is picked up from the ammo caches? Lets say I only want 50 rounds to be picked up. Is this possible?

- Is there any way to use custom models for the ammo caches? Lets say I have a model where it is a pile of m14 clips. Is there a way to do this without overwriting the normal l4d ammo models?

- Is there any way to change the weapon statistics via the cvars? Things could include ammo capacity, damage, accuracy, etc?

-FOLLOWUP- Is the only way to do this via sv_cheats? If so, is there a way to only make it SERVER SIDED to prevent clients cheating?

- Is there any way to, "spawn", ammo via mapping? For example, the survivors watch a quick movie of Francis making ammo via a device. At the end of it, there is a pile of ammo beside him.

SURVIVORS

- Is there any way to edit the player stats, (max run speed, max health, etc), WITHOUT using the cvars that require sv_cheats?

- Is there any way to edit player stats CLIENT SIDED? Another words, lets say Zoey enters a trigger that gives her super health; is there a way to use a cvar to make it so only SHE gets a permanent 50 bonus health?

- How in-debt can I go with editing player cvars? This would include player health, walk speed, max ammo, etc….

-FOLLOWUP- If it is possible to do all of this, is there a way to do it server-sided with sv_cheats? Is there a way to do it WITHOUT sv_cheats?

- Is there a way to manually add "more survivors" to a map? Lets say I want to have a hold-out fortress map, and I want 10 computer controlled teammates to help. Is there a way to do this, (either by using custom models, or by using louis-bots).

-FOLLOWUP- Is this possible WITHOUT sv_cheats? If not, is there a way to make cheats SERVER SIDED?

INFECTED

- Is there a way to restrict the type of infected spawned? For example, I only want BOOMERS spawned in my map, and no TANKS, WITCHES, HUNTERS, or SMOKERS. Is this possible?

- Is there a way to forcefully "vomit" the players? For example, lets say in part of my map I want the players to walk under a grate. They hear boomer sounds inside, but don't see him. When they walk under, they are vomited on, and it triggers the horde. Is this possible? I know you can have a trigger which spawns the horde, plays a sound, and has the vomit sprite, but is there a way to give the "puked on" water effect on both the model and the players screeen?

- I see that you can set spawn locations for infected, but is there a way to forcefully spawn boss infected? For example, you go into a room, and you see a tank behind a glass door. When you walk up to it, he breaks the glass and attacks!

- Is there ANY way you can place single infected, (boss and common), into a map? For example, in my intro, I want the players to walk into a room. All of a sudden, a common infected bursts through the door, (just a single one). Another scenario would be a spot in a map where you have to dodge a gauntlet of witches, (I dunno, a big warehouse with a shirtload of witches).

-Is there a way to change the maximum amount of boss infected spawned via a cvar? For example, lets say in part of my map I want 10 boomers to be spawned, (or hunters, or tanks).

-FOLLOWUP- Is there a way to change this amount and spawn them WITHOUT sv_cheats. If not, is there a workaround where it is only server sided and not client sided?
